Technical
Technically, for the engine, it’s a modification of the valve timing, which is clearly optimised from the factory for the stretches of German motorway where speeds are still unlimited. Before VVT, or Variable Valve Timing, when designing an engine, engineers always had to choose between favouring medium and high revs, or medium and low revs. At BMW, they logically chose the first solution. The one on offer here will favour low and medium revs, where we all drive most of the time in reality. You will feel the torque 800 to 1,000 rpm lower, depending on the model, giving you better acceleration not only on straights but also out of curves, when overtaking or driving with your passenger. You will even save on fuel consumption, because at a given speed, you’ll be in a higher gear, so the engine will turn less quickly. You will really get the feeling of riding a new bike, and enjoy it even more.
These special LRS sprockets, CNC-cut from high-grade steel, are designed to modify the valve timing on BMW Boxer R 850, R 1100, R 1150 and R 1200 engines until 2009. This shift in valve timing moves the maximum torque speed down by 800 to 1,000 rpm, depending on the motorcycle model. As a result, maximum torque is increased to engine speeds that are much more common in everyday driving, and engine response at low and medium engine speeds is significantly improved.
Another interesting aspect is that fitting these sprockets also takes up the slack caused by normal wear of the timing chain. For those who want to keep their bike, it’s also insurance against an operation that won’t have to be carried out for a long time, and which is very expensive: opening the engine to change the famous timing chain.
